Shanghai Surprise!

Since we liken Shanghai to a larger, fancier (in some areas), smoggier Toronto, we nearly felt at home in this city during our five days here. Don't get us wrong, there are still parts of it that bring to mind traditional visions of China, but the city is extremely modern and has everything one could need and more. In all honestly, there were a limited number of tourist sites so we only spent two days sight-seeing. This itenary turned out worked great for us as it allowed us to have a very relaxing and enjoyable Christmas holiday. In brief, we strolled Naijing Road East (shopping street), the waterfront (the Bund), and the Pudong district (sky scrapers - actually the whole city is highrises!).

Practicalities:
-Shanghai possesses one of the most efficient and extensive public transport systems either of us has ever experienced.
-English is very limited at even the nice hotels and restaurants so bring along a translation book or lots of patients with you (or both).
-Getting to/from the airport and the city centre is a cinch and one has many options including buses, taxis, Maglev superfast train, or metro. Side note - If you do leave later than the trains or during rush hour and have to take a cab, it can get pricey and its a long drive, so factor that in to your plans.
-Most restaurants include photos of each dish so if all else fails, do the point and smile!
