Been here 4 days now, and what a change from China. Believe it or not, the old quarter of Hanoi is way more hectic than China was. Its good though. Things here are incredibly cheap...like 17 cent beers! A few surprises...there are tonnes of tourists here, almost more than in Thailand, and lots of families (parents with kids ranging from 10-20 some years old). We havent seen that anywhere yet.
Today we went to see Ho Chi Minhs tomb. It was a regimented experience to say the least, with soldiers directing you to walk straight, make 90 degree turns, halt etc. After that we experienced one of the "fast" metered taxis. We went less than halfway back to our hotel, yet the taxi was already more than double the entire trip there. Needless to say we got out and Jarret had some choice words for the meter.
Two more things before heading off - its official...Jarret is taking antibiotics for the first time in a number of trips. Been sick for almost three weeks...serious sinus/ear infection we think, really really not looking forward to the flight tomorrow morning. Secondly, we forgot to mention this in the China wrap up, but we think the introduction of western food to China will be responsible for a massive obesity problem in 5-10 years. At local restos, people order 2-5 dishes and share, and then leave what they cant eat. When people eat at new western places, they are doing the same thing, except with super high fat and carb food vs lean meats, noodles/rice and sauteed veg. Pizza Hut may be the biggest culprit, we ate there once and a couple sitting next to us ate two appetizers, two soups, a medium pizza, an order of spaghetti, steak and potatoes, and an order of brocolli. It was a HUGE amount of food and they ploughed through it with reckless abandon. We are calling it now, western food obesity problem in china in ten years. Heard it here first!
