Its official, we are in the habit of staying in places longer than we anticipated. Planning for 2 nights in Hoi An, tonight will instead be our 4th. But, we do have a hotel booked in Ho Chi Minh for tomorrow, so we will be gone from here then.
A feel good story for the day then. This afternoon while waiting to go to a dr, (who turned out to be a dentist) we had coffee and a snack at "Streets". In 2009 a New Yorker had an idea to help street teens in and around Hoi An to rise up out of poverty and earn back their dignity and respect. Enter "Streets". There are about 16 people in the first stream of their 18 month program and 19 in the second stream. The program helps 17-20 year olds. Those in the program attend English and Life Skills classes in the morning, and then work at the restaurant in the afternoon. Over the course of 18 months, they work their way through different parts of the resto, from waiting to greeting to cooking to management. At the end of the program they graduate with a certificate credentialed from the Institute of Culinary Education based in Manhatten, this internationally recognized certificate helps them to get work in the hospitality industry.
Streets promises great food that helps great kids, and is a great example of how a few people can make a difference in the lives of dozens of people halfway across the world who really need it. Check out their website for more info. www.streetsinternational.org
