Romanian Wrap up

In Bulgaria now. The train ride here was long...but the town seems nice. It is geared toward outdoor things, but since it is raining, doubt we will do much of that. Anyways, here are our thoughts on Romania.

In keeping with the honesty, Romania was a let down. Accomodation was fine, and there were a few decent things to see, but overall we were disappointed. The main thing that got to us was the food. It was bad, consistently. We are talking one horrible meal, and then loads of edible ones. After five days it got frustrating. Maybe we just had unrealistic expectations, or maybe it was just the city we were in. Even though the towns started to grow on Jarret, the lack of good food limited their grow on potential. At least it was cheap.

Best of: Cheap resturants, good english spoken everywhere, mountain scenery

Worst of: Food (prob worst of any country we have ever been to), opening hours at tourist sites (Tourist info closed sunday, all sights closed Monday, some Monday and Tuesday), "shopping centres"

Best Meal: Leigh - NA, Jarret - KFC, sadly

Yes please: Semi sweet soft pretzel thingies

No thanks: stray dogs, like more stray dogs here than in all Latin America combined!

Surprising fact: Apparently school starts at age 7, and only goes from 8am - 12!

Candid confession: After not having KFC for at least one year, Jarret had it twice in two days!

Random thought: Did the person bringing the full bathtub on the passenger train have to buy a ticket for it, or does it count as luggage?

Good to know: Most travel agencies dont have a lot of tours on offer during the hub between summer and winter tourism. If you are interested in going into the mountains or doing day trips, be willing to pay a premium for private guide and car, or do as much on your own as you can.

Travel tip: If taxis are known for ripping people off, contact your next hotel/hostel and ask how much it usually costs to get there. Then write the address on a piece of paper and the price you are willing to pay (if there is no meter). This will help to avoid any arguments when it comes time to pay.

Enjoy the pics!

  1. After a lifetime of eating plastic based FDA aprooved junck food one should not be expected to know what natural organic food tastes like, hence no wonder the best food you had in Romania was same old familiar shit at KFC.There are a lot of bad or shitty things in Romania and in Europe for that matters (at least from the point of view of north americans)but food is not one of them .I have lived eight long years in NJ&PA so I know what I"m talking about.Best of luck in your travel!

  2. Wow. Actually we are from Canada, so the FDA doesnt approve our food. And growing up in small rural Canada, we were blessed with eating most of our food out of our own gardens. We have loved the food everywhere else we have been, and tend to leave fast food until the very last resort. Already the food in Bulgaria has been much much better. To each their own, and thanks for the travel wishes.
